Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I locked my bike to a bike rack on the NE corner of Clark and Division, which is the quiet, dark, less-traveled corner of an otherwise busy intersection. It was parked next to another bike, in front of a closed business. I was gone for no longer than an hour. When I returned, the bike was gone, along with the kryptonite U lock and cable too. Not a spoke remained. I can't remember exactly how I locked my bike that evening, but, often, when I won't be long (as in this case) and/or the bike rack is crowded, I will just wrap the kryptonite cable around the bike rack and front wheel and frame - the U lock I lock on the frame only. Meaning, the thief just had to cut through the cable in order to take off with the bike. My guess is that is what happened here.

The last time I rode my bike was the 4th of July. I always walk my bike back after riding in the park. This gives people, especially those who were standing on the corner of at the time, to see the bike's quality. It's a great looking bike. Since the building owners stupidly choose not to have the pedestrian door attached to the car gate to lock, someone could have walked to the back of the garage (which is open to an ally in the back where anyone can walk through, separated only by a chain-link fence). However, since most people who hang out in the streets in this area are never alone, it's possible that multiple people could have found a way to get to the back, open garage area to get to it. It was the only bike that was stolen (even though several other decent bikes were out there), which makes me think it must have been gunned for after seeing me walking it back.

Bike was stored in a basement storage room in an apt building. Thief went in and out through ground level window.

Yes, two of my bikes were stolen within a couple of days of each other!! But this one was special. I'd saved for 5 years to buy a Gary Fisher. The most unique element is the pirate flag sticker and the Chicago flag sticker. I don't know how anyone got it, since the back stairway is enclosed, and the door on the ground floor has two deadbolts which lock from the inside automatically. I had it locked with 2 Kryptonite u-locks, one through the front wheel & frame, the other through the rear wheel & frame. No sign of the locks, the railing wasn't broken, no sign of tampering on the deadbolts on the ground floor. The door also swings shut and is very heavy steel or something. If anyone finds it, I would really appreciate it. Like I said, I don't make a lot of money, and I saved for years to be able to buy a Gary Fisher. Thanks!

Went down to get my bike where it is always locked up, and it was gone.

Went on vacation, checked the garage, the bike was gone. My boyfriend's bike had been stolen out of the garage two weeks prior, but that was because we accidentally left it open. This time, the garage was closed (unless our neighbors left it open) and the bike was still stolen, even though it was locked to itself.

I believe the bike was stolen for resale as it looks brand new. The tire was flat when I locked it to the bike rack so that should actually not incentivize people to steal it. On the other side of the street there was an older bike locked to a metal pole that was there when I locked my own bike, and was still there when I came back and my bike was gone.

I locked it to the bicycle rack through the frame and front wheel. My back wheel had a locking skewer on it. Left it in broad daylight for the day, and when I returned it was no longer locked to said bicycle rack. Bummer.

Bike was locked to railing on porch - through closed gate, down porch walkway and around corner not visible to any outside area because area is fenced in. A person would have to go through the gate and walk down the skinny porch area and around the corner to a thin walkway that just included my bike, the air conditioning units and access to the locked basement.

Bicycle was inside enclosed parking garage near my parking space along with several other bikes. It was there in the morning and gone by the evening. Apparently several other bicycles have been stolen from the garage recently.

Bike was stored in my basement storage unit. The storage unit was locked, but the bike was not. Out of 13 bikes in the basement, mine is the only one missing (at first glance it would seem to be the most valuable). Bike may have been stolen by a neighbor, since we all have a key to the basement storage unit, but I have also been told that utility workers occasionally have access to the unit, and that the door does not always close properly. I suspect a specific neighbor, but I will say no more without evidence.

My black Cannondale was stolen from my locked entryway. The thief pried open one of the windows during the night and took only the bike (he must have known I kept it there). He then unlocked the door from the inside and left it standing wide open. I found it missing in the morning. (The image is a still from a movie I made I would never actually lock it like that). The bike was a gift so I don't have the serial number. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Schwinn Maroon Women's Single Speed Road Bike was stolen while attending West Fest on Sunday, July 11, between the time of 8:15 pm and 12:30 am. My bike, helmet and U-lock were all gone/stolen.
