Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

Was my thief in a halloween costume? Or perhaps a Halloween ghost? I locked my bike in front of Chicago's second largest library figuring it would be safe with the constant car traffic and people that always sit in front of the library chilling out. Across the street in Welles Park is a group of older gentlemen who play bocce ball every weekend. When I left the library and saw my bike missing, the couple people sitting outside said they didn't steal it. Then I saw my lock sitting on the ground. Cut. Either with a bolt cutter or a hacksaw. Also, this happened on Halloween. In this neighborhood, all the kids do their trick or treating on Lincoln Avenue, so there were even more people walking around. How can someone steal a bicycle with all these witnesses? My only guess is some sort of Halloween ghost. All in all this is shaping up to be like a game of Clue. -- We know the location. The LIBRARY. -- We know the weapon. The BOLTCUTTERS (or hacksaw). -- We do not know the CRIMINAL. Who could have seen this? The pedestrians. The trick or treaters. The auto drivers. The library loungers. The bocce ball players. This is a Halloween mystery that will haunt me for ages.

Locked my bike to my girlfriends bike and to a bike rack using cable lock. Went in for dinner. When I came out, the cable was cut and my bike was gone. My girlfriend's bike was still there, even though it was no longer locked.

I locked my bike (both wheels and frame) to a bike rack in front of Tech before 8:00 AM. When I left at 7:15 PM, my bike was gone, no sign of the lock. Lots of other bikes were around when I locked it up and when I discovered it missing, and it's a fairly busy, well-lit pedestrian area. The rack was fine. There is no trace of my Trek Kryptonite cable lock. Report was filed with Northwestern Police.

Please if anyone see's this bike at all. Its a very bright blue and hard to miss. It means alot to me.

Bike was stolen from the garage at some point Saturday night (10/24/09) or Sunday morning (10/25/09)

The bike was in my home garage, someone broke into the garage and took my bike.

I saw the bike at 1:30pm with the accessories still on it, at about 3:30pm I came out to ride the bike and found the items had been removed. It was a Sunday afternoon, bright sunny day with moderate foot traffic and heavy motorized traffic. I briefly questioned several commuters at the SB #50 Damen bus stop and a proprietor of a local business. No one had seen anything.

I idiotically left my bike in pieces in the back seat of my car at 11:00 p.m. on 10/23/09 and rushed home because I had to wake up early for work. When I returned to my car at 6:30 a.m. on 10/24/09, I noticed the smashed window and missing bike.

The bike was locked up to a heavy, wrought-iron fence, through the frame. The lock and the bike were gone, but the fence is fine.

Back fence was jumped, unlocked from inside, I'm assuming another thief was let in. They pried the garage door open and stole my bike and my roommate's (2006 Fuji tour bike, magenta with silver and black detailing). Left my girlfriend's yellow fixed gear with green deep v's, our JC Penny tandem and my roommate's other (disassembled) Mercier Kilo II fixed gear. Makes us think there were just two and only took what they could ride. I hope the one who took mine was really short and had never ridden a fixed gear before and totally wiped out a million times.

I went to work on the CTA on a drizzly day, and when I got back from work my bike was gone (as was the bike lock).

Locked bike to a "Do Not Enter" signpost just northeast of the McDonald's at Milwaukee and Western around 12:20AM, 10/18. Returned at 5:20AM to find signpost removed from base and on the ground, bike gone. The sign post is 9-10 feet tall w/ Do not Enter and One Way signs at the top, so the thief most likely unbolted the signpost from the base with a wrench, removed the post from the base, and slid the bikelock off of the bottom of the signpost. Returned at 5pm, 10/18 and signpost was upright, back in its base.

I saw the bike in the back yard in the morning when I left the house on October 14. Shortly after midnight, I noticed it was missing. I assume someone walked in through our gangway and simply walked off with it, lock and all. I am trying to track down the serial number, but I failed to note it myself before it was stolen. The bike was less than 3 months old. It was locked to itself with a U-lock.

Someone pried the hardware off of a basement storage room door, entered and stole my beloved bike... The basement isn't visible from the street which makes me think that someone has seen me bring the bike there - either a neighbor (sad, very, very sad) or someone following me.

The bike was U-locked overnight to the end side of a bike rack in the back alley of the group of apartment complexes I live in. The thief, using a power-drill or something similar, unhinged the top of the rack from the side, jimmying my bike up between where he/she unscrewed the two metal bars. Many bikes have been stolen from this location and it most likely the same thief.

The bike was stolen in broad daylight from a bike rack on the University of Chicago's campus, while I was in class. There were many other bikes locked to the same rack.

I had a U-lock AND a chain lock. The bike was parked outside the south entrance of the Logan Square Blue Line stop. There was a camera that may have captured the image of the thief.

In a rush to catch the train, the bike was only U-locked thru the fork / front wheel. The lock was left unlocked and unharmed.
