Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

In the haste of moving I locked my trials bike and fixie to a bike rack outside the logan square blue line stop, where I assumed the high traffic and video cameras would deter bike thieves. Distracted by moving and school, I left my bikes locked there for almost a week, which was a huge mistake. When I returned, both bikes and the lock were gone.

I had locked my bicycle to a fence in my friends enclosed back yard while I was having dinner there. The thieves cut the fence apart, and took the bike. It happened between 6-10pm. The ULock was locked to the frame and to the fence, so when the fence was cut, the thieves could take the bike. The lock would still be attached to the frame (Until they cut it off...)

3-4 men removed the handicap sign pole infront of the building and took off on bikes within seconds.

I had come back from a ride around 11:30 pm on Tuesday night (9/2/08) and placed my bike as usual in the basement of our building. I only lock it up when I go out and leave the lock without a key on a table next to the bike. The bike was placed in the basement in the back room (not visible unless you go around two corners to the back of the basement) in the dark, behind the locked basement door and the locked gate. I went to go for a ride Friday (9/5/08)around 5:30pm and the bike and u-lock were gone. The gate has been not always closing lately, but the basement has to be opened with a key that everyone in the building has. Thursday night I noticed the basement door open, but I just assumed someone was in there doing laundry. Perhaps that is when someone left it open and someone came in to steal the bike. Only my bike out of all the others in there - others also unlocked.

They must have cut through the Kryptonite lock to get the bike off the rack. I had it hooked through the front tire and the main frame and onto the bike rack...there were scrapes on the concrete around the bikerack from whatever they used to get the bike off....= (

My bike was locked to the bike rack that I always lock it to, the one behind my building. The area is kind of dark and I think a lot of bike/parts theft happens there. I didn't ride my bike to work that day (thursday) because it was raining. My boyfriend came home from work and noticed that my bike wasn't next to his and thought it was odd (since it was raining and I probably didn't ride to work). We went out to check after I came home from work (11pm) and noticed the cut cable lying on the ground next to the bike rack. THE THIEF HAD LEFT AN OLD BIKE, one that they probably "switched" for mine. It was a med. sized red road bike that was pretty beat up.

Bike was in the storage locker in my building. They popped the lock on the storage unit. They also removed a U lock and thick cable lock that secured the bike to the wall. No trace of the locks was left - no clue how they cut/removed them so easily. They stole the bike, locks, and helmet that was with it.

The only logical explanation is that the frame wasn't locked to the bike rack; I can't understand how else the bike could have been stolen.

My bike was locked up behind my house (to my back staircase) for a few days- apparently someone came during the night and cut my padlock. My neighbor's bike was right next to mine with a u-lock on it, and was unharmed.

bike was locked up outside place i was volunteering. when i came out at 5pm it was gone.

I had my bike shipped from the last city I lived in, and it arrived on Friday. SAFE THERE UNTIL I co yard, thinking it would be safe there until I could go get a bike lock on Sunday, but when I went to check on it Sunday morning, it was gone! I think it was stolen either Friday night (8/29) or Saturday (8/30), but I wasn't home much those days to know for sure. All I know is that someone jumped our super high fence to steal a bike that's not worth more than about $50, max. Both tires are flat, the handle bar had been loosened for shipping, the chain was loose, and the bike is generally just old and not in great shape. I don't even know if it had a serial number, unfortunately!

I locked my bike at the sketchy ravenswood metra stop right on the bike rack. I got back a little later than usual (8:00) and even saw someone along the walk stealing someones bike tire! I talked to him but what could I do? When I got to the rack most of the bikes were gone, including mine. The next day I rode my crappy back up bike and the seat was stolen.

Had to run into my apartment, came out 20 minutes later, and it was gone.

I stored this bike in my apartment's bicycle storage space around 8:30 pm on August 31. I did not check on the bike at all Monday, Sept, 1. I noticed it was missing around 10am on Tuesday September 2. The bike was either taken by someone in the building, or an individual who had access to the building.

I used my bike all the time, I always used a thick cable lock through both wheels, the seat and the frame, I then wrapped it around a 6" x 6" support post for my staircase. So, the bike was locked under the stairs to the stairs. The lock was thrown in the front lawn and a junk girl's huffy was left in place.

I locked the bike to a bike rack at a busy intersection. When I went back to check it was gone. There was a guy sitting next to the bikes hanging out drinking coffee who seemed to have some idea what was going on (he was kind of laughing). I came back 10 mins later with my phone and two cops were across the street and the guy was gone. He may have been somehow involved - or not...

Bike was locked with cable and U-lock to a bike rack. It was at the farthest north rack on Ashland just south of Armitage - the only rack not under the underpass. Next to Kenosha line stairs. Across the street from the 7-11. I parked it there around 10:45am on 9/1 and found it stolen at 8am on 9/2. It was stolen on my birthday! Boo. Searching for paper work to include serial number. Purchased from Kozy.

Thief must have climbed fence & walked about 50 ft. into yard and lifted bike in to alley. Outside most of the day, ran to the store and left bike in yard. We live near Reis Park and the Brickyard Mall.

Locked the bike up outside the entrance to the Lincoln Park Zoo at the designated rack. When I came back an hour later it was gone.

Bike was stolen. Lock is missing along with bike in front of METRA station at Madison & Canal
