Serial No.:

Size:
20"
Color:
Black
Condition of Bicycle / Distinguishing Features:
The Milano is designed to be a city commuter bike and has a number of distinct features: a gently curved top tube, a Shimano internal 8-speed hub, 26" wheels, fenders front and rear, chain guard. I've added more items to make this really a one-of-a-kind: wider than usual flared Nitto Albatross handlebars taped end to end in black, Alias 15 watt front light w/frame mounted battery, mirror on left end of handlebar, bell on right end of handlebar, Specialized split seat w/red blinker on seat post, a Jandd black rear rack. To make things far worse, I also had two Jandd packs clipped to this rack: an empty-and-collapsed-shut black "grocery bag" pannier, and a black "commuter" pannier - brief case style w/3 zippered compartments. This second bag was full of my stuff from the day: a Motorola flip cell phone, Dell Axim PDA, wallet w/the usual, 6 folders chock full of personal papers, clothes. A few other unique features are two stickers on seat tube: one is "Cafe Racer" and another "Purchased at On the Route Bikes".

How long was the bike locked in this location?:
5 minutes
Incident Description:
I had stopped to use the bathroom at the North Ave. Beach House and wheeled my bike inside to lean against the wall - unlocked as I've done safely in the past. Although it was in eyesight, a stall door swung open or I just wasn't paying attention and I turned to leave and - Poof - it was gone. I ran out to the bike path but couldn't see the thief. I quickly asked around and was told "a guy in a white tshirt" was hauling ass southbound towards Oak St. and Navy Pier and who knows.... I caught up with 3 plain-clothed CPD cops about 10 minutes later who said they'd head south down LSD in their car to try to intercept(?), and filed the police report. Obviously I'm bummed, pretty screwed actually, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

My bike was secured underneath the stairway up to the second level of my covered back deck. Though usually locked, it was not at the time it was stolen. It was taken some time on Friday or Saturday, the 18th or 19th of May. I imagine someone hopped the fence in my front yard, went down the side alley and just rode off on the bike. There were other items that could have been stolen from my deck, but they were left as they were. The bike was not two feet from my back door, in an area that I had hoped was a little more secure that it clearly was.

Condition of Bicycle / Distinguishing Features:

Also, there may be a sticker indicating that it was from the Traverse City Bike Shop.

Lock Information

How was the lock defeated?:

Lock Type:

What was the bike locked to?:
Bike not locked.

Incident Description

Which type of area was your bike stolen from?:
Porch or yard.
How was the bike locked?:
Not locked.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:
30-60 minutes
Incident Description:
The bike was there when I left the apartment at 5:05pm and my landlord said it was gone when he left sometime around 5:30-6:00pm. The thief was considerate enough to leave my helmet behind. The courtyard is protected by a locked door, so the only way someone could have reached it is if both the gates to the alley/street were open as well as the courtyard door. The bike could not have been seen from either the alley or street, so I believe the theif either knew it was there and was waiting for their opportunity to take it or someone randomly took advantage of unlocked doors to see if there was anything worth stealing. I trust the people in my building, but our next-door building neighbors share the same side passageway so they could have easy access if the courtyard door was unlocked.

Front tire had old school gum sidewalls, the rear was a black Bontrager slick. What was the bike locked to?:
Locked to bike rack.

Incident Description

Which type of area was your bike stolen from?:
Sidewalk in front of an open business.

How long was the bike locked in this location?:
I locked it at 8:50 am on Friday, May 11. By 11:50 am, it was gone.
Incident Description:
I was at the Thompson Center at 8:45 am and some bikers (dressed like messengers) were commenting on how nice my bike was and I should get a better lock. They were right, but I said I want to keep honest people honest and rode off with plans to get a new lock the following day--the interaction was a little too weird. After I got to work and locked it, it was gone three hours later. Coincidence perhaps, but far too odd for my taste. I suspect one of them followed me to work and stole it, or somebody nearby overhearing our conversation did it. It's a shame--I had that bike 16 years prior to this.

Incident Description

Which type of area was your bike stolen from?:
Storage room.
How was the bike locked?:
Only the frame was locked a solid object.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:
11 hours
Incident Description:
My bike was stolen from a locked bicycle storage area in the basement of my apartment complex. Only apartment tenants and staff should have access to this room. There was a bike reported stolen from the same room only two months ago--at that time, the doors to the storage area could be left unlocked or propped open. After that incident, the landlord modified the locks so they could not be left unlocked, and letters were posted warning tenants to not prop doors open and to lock their bikes. I locked my bike at 11PM, and saw nothing unusual. The doors were closed and locked. I returned the following morning at 9:55AM and found my bike missing. To my knowledge, no other bikes were missing from the area. The locked nature of the bike storage area implies that either someone unauthorized has keys to the room, or that someone within the apartment complex stole my bike. I searched the rest of the basements in the apartment complex; my bike was not there. I've filed a police report, and reported the theft to my landlord, who has promised to contact the City of Evanston Police Department about strengthening the security of the bike storage area.
