Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I got home and stored my bike in the fully enclosed and secured (locked and deadbolted) back porch/stairwell/storage area in the rear of our home. My roommate's bike was also back there. When I got up 6 hours later both bikes were gone and the door was wide open. The police won't call this a burglary or a breaking and entering because the doorknob was not broken. However, the area was is fully enclosed so it might as well have been in our living room. Another roommate was woken up around 4AM to the sounds of commotion in the backyard but was not so concerned that she thought to investigate. The bikes were not visible through a window or any other way from the outside so the thieves who took these bikes had to have known they were there by watching us walk them to the back yard each day. This leads me to believe it was someone from our neighborhood. Which makes me feel pretty terrible. NOTE: THE IMAGE INCLUDED IS NOT OF THE EXACT BIKE BUT OF THE SAME MODEL. I locked the bike on a rack outside of my office at 8:15 in the morning. When I came out at 6 PM the area my bike had been parked in was baracaded and the rack had a sign on it stating that bikes needed to be vacated immediately for construction. My bike and lock were nowhere in site. Initially I assumed that my bike had been impounded due to the bike rack being moved during construction. I tried to contact the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) unsuccessfully that evening so I sent an email to a bike program manager at CDOT. The next morning (July 6) when I arrived at work I saw the construction workers cutting the bike rack out with a chop saw and knew immediately that my bike had not been impounded and had actually been stolen sometime during my work day on July 5.

My bike had been locked to a bike rack in the sheltered bike parking area at the Howard & Paulina L-train stop. The bike rack is right behind a single person unit that an L-train worker always resides in. I asked a woman working in the unit if bikes are stolen right there where a worker is always present and she said yes. That they do the best they can to always chase away a few guys who hang around there looking suspicious. But that there's only so much they can do. That bikes are stolen from there regularly. Something I wasn't aware of until mine was missing.

Locked to a rack at a busy section of Damen just near St. Paul. I was visiting a friend's house for Fourth of July festivities. Didn't plan on staying long as it was getting late. After saying hi and bye after 45 minutes or so, I proceeded to go to the bike rack and find my front wheel along with the newer u-lock w/flat key left hanging. Yeah, I didn't lock it up well. My fault. But it's still not cool.

Bike was parked in large bike rack area. U-Lock was severed with a small piece left behind - there did not appear to be any cut or saw marks, rather a clean break.

The bike was locked to a tree and locked with 4 other bikes. The thief cut through all 3 of our cables. This was the only bike stolen from the group of 5. It was parked on the lake front path and there 100s of people around.

Newer U-Lock w/flat key was locked to the frame & front wheel onto a street sign. The front tire was released from the bike and left locked to the pole. This happened between 10am & 2pm on Saturday. Businesses were open and the sidewalk was active all day.

I hate bike thieves. This is my second stolen trek 7.2. If anyone sees one going for sale a little too cheap, let me know.

Stole bike from garage

Due to the Taste of Chicago, the Metra train wasn't allowing bikes on the train. Therefore I had to lock my bike to a metal railing last week during the day. On Thursday, June 30 , when I returned all that was left was a sawed through U-lock.

The Bike was locked inside CTA Redline Loyola train station day of the Storm. Went back to location 10 am yesterday and the bike wasn't there. I think the unusual part to me thus far is the fact that there are cameras in that station, so I assuming they have the thieve(s) on film. I'll find out Tuesday

Bike was left in fenced-in back yard with closed gate. I left to exercise dog and when I came back, bike was gone.

Bike was there just for the day. Lock and bike are gone. the bike is really recognizable because of the Furman University sticker on the main frame and the plastic bags around the saddle. There's also a big ding in the paint on the main frame.

On Thursday 30th/6 around 3pm, my roomate (Sarabeth Avila Abud) rode my bike,which I agree to lend, from home North Harbor Tower to the Museum of Cotemporary Art (MCA). She went to visit a mutual friend, Bana Kattan, who works for the museum. She locked my bike to the bike rack located in the corner of E. Chicago Av and Mies Van de Rohe. This bike rack is close to the entrance to the museum giftstore and next to the bus stop. Around 4:30, when she was ready to go back home, she realized that the bike wasn't in the place she locked it. She went to the museum's Security Office to see if they had evidence on the event (video). After she described what happened,the museum's Security Office told her that they have a video about the incident. She was told that the video shows that around 4:30 pm an African American man, about 6 foot tall, who was wearing black t-shirt and blue hat,stole the bike. The man arrived to the bike rack to lock the bike he was biking. He locked his bike next to mine, and then after a couple of minutes he left the place riding my bike. She is almost moving out of the States and I am moving to another apartment.

Went to get breakfast and when I came back I locked the bike to the fence and went to sleep. Bike was gone when girlfriend went outside at 8 am. I believe the culprit saw me leave and waited for me to come back. Locked with newer u-lock w/flat key. Iron bar of the fence was cut.

I locked the bike at around 8:30pm to the inside of the fence in front of my apartment building. My roommate checked on the bike at around 10pm and said the bike was still locked and fine. I got home at around 10:25pm and the bike lock was cut and the bike was gone. There were a couple kids still playing basketball across the street at Wicker Park. I then walked around the block and there was a Bible Ministry bus on the other side of the park as well. There are homeless people and low income housing residents that hang out in the park till around 11pm every night. I spoke with Officer Nelsen(first name), who patrols the area on his police bicycle and he said he would bet that a homeless person stole it. I'm just trying to figure out what homeless person has a set of cable or padlock cutters. I walked around the neighborhood and checked the gas stations(with air pumps) because both tires were flat. I did not find anything.

Bike was locked to bike rack across the street from the entrance of the Central Street el stop, about about 30 feet from an Evanston Fire Department garage. Bike was locked overnight from about 9:00 and was discovered missing around 5:00 p.m. the next day. Central Street was probably quiet so thieves found it easy to cut the lock and ride off without being noticed (but pretty gutsy next to the fire station!). Bike was locked secure to the rack. Lock was broke while I was inside a movie theater. No evidence of the theft was left.

Mourning the loss of my best friend. Bike Thief: I hexed you. Return my bike and hex will be removed.
