Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

Between approximately 9am and 1pm, the garage door of my apartment (3 car garage) was left open and bike was left for the taking. Yes, I know it should have been locked, but I just purchased the bike (used) and had not yet purchased a good lock for it.

Bike was in locked garage but not locked to anything; when we came back from lunch, the garage door was open and two bikes were gone.

The Giant Defy 1 XL, along with a lime green Haro full suspension mountain bike were both stolen from a 3rd floor internal stairwell platform at our 10-flat condo building on Kenmore Ave between Foster and Winona in Uptown. The thieves gained access to the bikes by jimmying two separate locks, one at the back parking lot gate and then the other at bottom of the stairwell to the condo building. It appears that the thieves took the most expensive things they could find, as other items where left untouched throughout the back stairwell. My Giant Defy had a single pannier bag hanging on the back rack, a Bell helmet and riding gloves within it. There was also a heavy-duty U-Lock on the back rack, as I rode to and from the office downtown twice a week. I suspect the thieves walked the bikes right out the back door and back parking lot / gate and down our alley. The Haro mountain bike had 2 flat tires, so it was probably walked away, while my Defy was ridden.

The bike was stolen from the second floor's emergency stair landing - exterior, attached to the back of the building. Both wheels and the frame were locked to the metal rail of the stair by cable and padlock - padlock was cut with fence cutters. The yard has 7' tall gate that is locked most of the time.

Bike was in a retail window display (for J.C. Lind Bike Co.) across the street from J.C. Lind Bike Co. No sign of forced entry so either the door was left unlocked by one of the landlords employees or agents or else someone had a key to get in.

I was in a hurry and in my stupidity I locked my U-lock to the bike rack and missed my frame. When I got back it was gone. dumb

Bike was on display (for J.C. Lind Bike Co.) in a window of an empty retail space at 1254 N. Wells street. Door was either left open by landlord or one of their employees or else the thief had a key to gain entry as there was no forced entry. There were two other bikes stolen in the same incident and will post additional reports for those.

I got distracted while locking up my bike to the fence next to the front of Handlebar. I must have passed the Heavy Duty Bike Security Chain over the frame instead of through it and ended up only locking the front wheel. When I came out a few hours later, only the wheel was left locked up to the fence :(

My Bike was locked in front a friends house each night this weekend (friday and saturday), during the day I was removing and riding but locking it up to the main iron bar of the fence each night. Saturday night a neighbor had commented that he'd seen people admiring it. Sunday Morning the bike was gone, along with lock. There was a note that said "move your bike somewhere else, i stopped someone trying to steal it at 4:30 AM." Clearly someone was intent on getting it as they came back and got it (no damage to the fence) and left the note.

The only items left behind were cut bungie cords. So the thieves must have been in a hurry. Possibly scrappers in North West Indiana of Hammond. This is a heavily gang infested area. A lot of stealing is present along the tree street in North Hammond.......Even the Hammond Police are cautious. Due to Hammond budget cuts, the Hammond Police no longer have bike patrols unless it is at a festival.....

Bike has been parked in the yard for over a 3 months since moving to new apt. Locked to itself with a newer u-lock w/flat key. Stolen last night in the rain.

Due to a mover's not showing up I had to move a lot of my items to a new apartment via a car and did not have room to bring the bike that. I had locked it securely to a bike rack and had to make plans to come back and ride it my new apartment at the first available opportunity. That unfortunately wasn't until a week later. When I showed up to get it, the bike was gone.

I work at Peet's Coffee and Tea. I have ridden my bike to work there five times a week for the entirety of the summer and spring and periodically in the winter. Yesterday afternoon I locked my bike outside of work, worked an 8 hour shift, and then got out of work. My bicycle was still locked. I spent the night at a friend's house in Evanston and went to work again this afternoon at noon. My bicycle was there this morning at noon. After work at roughly 10:00pm, I went outside to go get my bicycle and it was no longer there. I searched the meter for signs of tamper and discovered both pieces of my cut Kryptonite Ulock on the ground by the meter.

I kept my handcycle on a rack on the wall in the enclosed garage of my 24-unit condo building, in my parking space area. It was secured to a metal ring that was bolted to the concrete block wall with the thickest cable lock that I could find (I probably should have used several u-locks.) I don't know the exact time it was stolen but I did wake up and hear some noises from the alley behind the building at around 2:00 AM on Friday, Sept. 16. Other bikes have been stolen from our garage recently.

Bike was stolen during a 15 min window, steps from the HS main entrance. Lock was somehow opened and rack is undamaged. The bike is highly customized with all new parts, only the original 1997 Yellow Carbon Frame is old.

In parking garage of condo building. 2 gates, many people leave their bikes in the garage usually locked to themselves, another one was stolen the same night.

I parked my bike outside my office a little after 8 am. I came back out at 11:45 to go to lunch and it was gone. No sign of the lock.
