This bike is almost new. I've had it for only a few months. It has Nitto Mustache handlebars and an eclectic mix of parts. Unique features include the frame/size (not many of this model, size and color exist) and 650B size wheels. Bike had everything shown in the photo: Brooks saddle, rack, fenders, etc.

Locked through rear wheel and frame to object.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:

Incident Description:
I park in this location on most days that I work. Probably 4-5 times a week. The bike is a really pretty nice and sort of rare. Someone may have scoped out my bike there before or just realized it is a valuable bike. There are usually a lot of bikes locked in that area, so I would guess it's a "usual" spot for thieves to pass by.

Location

Pole On Waveland Just East of Damen, South Side of Street
1955 W Waveland
Chicago , IL
United States

Date of Theft

Saturday, November 19, 2011 - 6:30pm

Basic Bike Info

Bicycle Type:
Fixed Gear / Track Bike
Size:
23" frame
Color:
Black and White
Condition of Bicycle / Distinguishing Features:
I made the bicycle myself, from parts, and painted it too. It was almost entirely black and white, with a black and white striped top tube, all other tubes black, white stem (but paint flaking to reveal silver below), flat black handlebar, white Gusset saddle, light blue grips (look kinda gray from use). There was a little wear on the striped paint near the front of the top tube, from locking and leaning the bike on poles. It is a single-speed rear coaster brake bike, so it will look a bit like a fixed gear from afar, but is not one.

Lock Information

How was the lock defeated?:
Lock was cut, and left at the scene.
Lock Type:
Heavy Duty Bicycle Security Chain
What was the bike locked to?:
Locked to street sign.

Incident Description

Which type of area was your bike stolen from?:
Front of building in residential area.
How was the bike locked?:
Locked through front wheel and frame to object.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:
45 minutes
Incident Description:
I just got off work around 12:15 am on Saturday night the 19th (morning of Sunday the 20th, by the clock). I parked my bike in front of a friend's apartment, planning to hang out for just a little bit. I locked the bike with my heavy duty link chain, closed with a small U-lock, both the front wheel and the frame. The pole was in plain sight of both Waveland and Damen, just about 10 feet in from the corner. At around 12:45, my friend's girlfriend came upstairs, and I lent her some money to pay back a friend outside the building. At around 1:05, I left the apartment, and found my lock on the ground, with one of the chain links cut twice, to make a gap large enough to slide off. They'd tried to cut another link, but failed. I immediately filed a police report (I have the number written down elsewhere, so I will post it as soon as I get back to it). Given the tight window, the bike must have been stolen either between 12:15 and 12:43, or between 12:48 and 1:05, since my friend was outside for a few minutes between 12:43 and 12:48. Thanks so much to anyone who has a lead on this!

Incident Description:
The sign post I attached my bike to was buried in the ground. The post was easily lifted and bike and U-lock were removed together. Someone may have walked off with the bike, but it makes more sense that they drove up in a car. The people who did this likely steal bikes from the location regularly because they new to slide the pole out and I assume did so with little hesitation. There is a chance that the person simply walked out of the park to steal the bike as well.
