They cut right through the cable lock and left my man's bike lying there and mine was gone. Heartbreaking. My bike store Bicycle Heaven told me by now it's long gone, probably sold three times or more within the first two days...

Not locked.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:
It was stolen from my job. My last delivery happened about twenty minutes before the bike was taken.
Incident Description:
I deliver at the Jimmy John's in Wicker Park. I took a delivery on foot because it was so close and when I returned my bike was gone. I'm sure that it was taken through the back door because this door was ajar when I found the bike gone. Because it was take through the back, I'm led to believe that the thief was somewhat familiar with the store. Also, had it been taken through the front door, my coworkers would have seen it happen. My boss made a point to mention that he didn't remember any customers enter the store after I had taken that delivery on foot which means that it was most likely stolen by a customer who was already in the store when I left. Tomorrow I will be able to see the surveillance tapes of it happening and it seems pretty likely that I could recognize the thief as a costomer if nothing else..

There were two bke racks- one on each side of the sign with older bikes already locked on them. While in the market (after 20 minutes) I looked out the window and saw several people standing by the bikes- I initially thought they were locking their bikes up, but decided to check on ours- by the time I walked back through the market and out the bistro door, both bikes were gone. The cable locks weren't very thick, I assume they were cut, but don't know. One of the guys I saw was wearing a hoody and a jean jacket. The other older bikes chained to the rack were still there.

Indoors, within 15feet of me for about an hour
Incident Description:
We were having a potluck in the storefront of Stop Smiling. Bike was in the room with about 20 other people, this guy walked in, looked around, walked out with the bike. Since not everyone knew everyone else, when he entered other witnesses assumed he was friends with someone there. I was facing my bike, looked down to answer a text on my phone, looked up and it was gone. My lock and helmet were on the handlebars, the reason being, other bikes had been stolen from in front of the building so I brought my bike in--and who would possibly steal my bike in front of 20 people? It's just...argh.

Basic Bike Info

Bicycle Type:
Mountain Bike
Serial No.:
[may still be on record at previous university - will check]
Size:
Small
Color:
Purple (Dark)
Condition of Bicycle / Distinguishing Features:
Small Women's bicycle - dark purple with outlined lettering in black+white - with large Wald twin basket (13.5 in x 6.25 in x 11 in) on back. Yellow "I [tomato] my farmer" bumper sticker aligned with long axis on top of top tube, and a small ~1.5 inch square Brown University DPS sticker on front fork, as well as the small square yellow sticker of "East Providence Cycles" atop the lower tube, near the lower end. These stickers may well be gone by now. Seatpost is secured with Allen bolt, not quick-release. Wheels are still quick-release. Cylindrical magnet on front wheel spoke and bracket on handlebars for speedometer; front-light bracket and (recently dented by unknown manner) black bell also on handlebars. (order: Left - bell - frontlight bracket - Center - speedometer bracket - Right) Black water-bottle carrier bolted to frame. Very good condition - corners of front tires still have some hairs. All functionality (steering, gear mechanism, etc.) excellent; the chain shows small spots of rust upon close inspection, but it looks shiny from a distance. Steering cables have considerable give - can be pulled about an inch perpendicularly from tube.) Minor but noticeable scrapes of paint from sides of top (and bottom?) tubes. Numerous small fractures in the plastic sheathing of brake/steering cables near handlebars (location of maximum curvature and strain) - these fractures appear slightly brown due to incipient rust of cables. The top picture shows the bicycle when I originally bought it; the bottom is a more recent photo since moving to Chicago (but before adding the bright yellow Farmers Market sticker).

Lock Information

How was the lock defeated?:
Lock is missing, along with the bike.
Lock Type:
Cable w/ Integrated Key Lock
What was the bike locked to?:
Bike was locked only to itself.

Incident Description

Which type of area was your bike stolen from?:
Porch or yard.
How was the bike locked?:
Bike was locked only to itself, through one or both wheels.
How long was the bike locked in this location?:
up to 15.75 hours (5:45 PM Oct. 18 to ?? before 9:30 AM Oct. 19)
Incident Description:
The bicycle was locked to itself (through both wheels) by a large-diameter cable with a bag covering the seat around 5:45 PM Monday, Oct. 18, 2011. By 9:30 AM the next morning it was gone, as was the body of the lock (I did not check the dumpsters!! duh.), but two irregular pieces from the plastic casing of the lock mechanism were on the ground, as was the plastic bag that had been tied over the seat. Thus the lock seems to have been broken at the point of the locking mechanism. The bicycle was not locked to any objects because 1) there were no convenient secure objects, and 2) this was in a fenced backyard with an automatically locked door. The fact that the lock was broken exactly at the scene suggests that it might not have been someone who lived there - they could easily have carried it into their apartment and broken/picked the lock in privacy. That said, the bicycle's location was sheltered from view of most of the other residents' porches by a fire escape, although it was in full view of back windows of another apartment complex.
