Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I was finishing up work at 5am, having had worked a 12+ hour day at the Ruthpage Center for the Arts at 1016 N Dearborn. I was in the lobby of the theatre when I heard a grinder outside. Thought at first it could be road work, but it seemed too early, and then realized my bike was outside. Ran out front door, saw a guy grinding off my lock with a battery powered grinder. He had removed my front wheel, which was still locked to the frame and bike rack. I yelled at him, told him I was calling the police, and he said, "Go ahead." I stood in the doorway and watched him grind out a chuck of the lock, put my wheel back on and ride off down an alley. My boss hopped in her car and went after him, but she never saw him after he had left. The bikes were locked in a basement room, that was only accessible through 2 locked doors. The back door was forced open, and the bikes were singled out from a couple of other bikes (some not even locked) in the same room. Therefore it was probably a planned burglary or informed theft.

I just got home and forgot to lock the bike which I usually do, but I was tired and probably got too complacent that I didn't. I took a nap at maybe around 12:30pm and when I woke up at 3:30pm the bike was gone. We live in an apartment complex that is not that big, it is gated although you can get in without buzzing in. We are on the 3rd floor and we don't have an elevator so I was thinking that whoever took the bike must have knew someone who lives here or just happened to see the bike on our porch and decided to take it which I doubt because if you are just walking around the neighborhood you will never notice or see my bike on the porch unless you enter the gate of our apartment complex. I asked our neighbor if she saw anything unusual and she said she saw 2 teenagers hanging around the first floor, 1 with a bike and 1 without, that's all she can tell me.

The bike was locked to a wooden fence on the second floor of 809 W. Bradley, just off of Halsted, in the rear of the building. The back parking lot has a gate-secured entry, which can apparently be easily bypassed. The thief took apart the section of the fence/railing to remove the bike; until he manages to cut off the lock, it will still be attached to the bike (ABUS security chain with keyed access). The roommate of the friend who lives there tells me it was still there when he got home at about noon today, and it was gone at 4:00 pm. I do not have a photo of this bike, but it appears essentially the exact same as stock photos (plus the add-ons I described).

Bike was forgotten next to car. When I remembered and went back, it was gone.

Someone broke into my garage, and broke the industrial shelving system that the bike was attached to.

The bike was locked on the left side of Lincoln Park Botanical Conservatory during sunny Saturday, September 29th, 2012. It was locked with another bike which has much lesser value. Two hours later we found a hanging lock and only one bike, missing the most expensive one. We filed a police report on the scene.

Bike was left locked to a bike rack over night out side of the Western Blue line station (Western and Milwaukee). Some time with in 24 hours it was stolen. I came to retrieve the bike and it was gone, lock included. The bike was locked with a cable cross wire around the frame, rear wheel and the rack, locked by a U-Lock (don't remember the brand) that was around the front wheel, frame, and rack. Checked and double checked everything.

Everyday I leave my bike next to our garage at the end of the driveway, I ride to and from the train station and leave at 6am. I usually use a combination lock to lock it to the chain link fence but have stopped doing that for the past couple of weeks. When I went outside this morning the bike was not there. It must have been stolen between 11pm and 6am. No signs of the thief were left at the scene.

I locked my bike to the rack at 9:20am at Michigan Ave and Monroe St. When I got out of my office, I did not find the bicycle where I had locked it.

Bike stolen in daytime near busy greenline L stop in bucolic Oak Park amid many other bikes. This is a large bike with clip less pedals, so someone else probably would look a little awkward riding it unless it's a 6' 5" thief. Apparently another bike theft was attempted but they "only" we're able to steal the wheels.. Same day same rack.

I believe the cable was cut and then taken along with the bike.

I had a few subletters at my apartment this summer while I was away for business. My bike was taken by one of the 3 subletters.

My 2012 Cannondale Bad Boy Fatty 9 hybrid bike was stolen. It was locked to a stop sign at the corner of Dayton Rd. & Wisconsin using a u-lock device. The sign was on the SW corner of the intersection. The thieves pulled out the sign in the middle of the night to take the bike. The bike is all black and in new condition. It has Cannondale written in black matte paint on the cross bar. The u-lock was a small orange kryptonite brand lock that still may be attached to the bike.

The bike was locked through the frame. The cable was cut with metal cutters (which was left on site). this is not visible from the street or the alley. I went to the get the paper this morning and notice our front gate was open and there was a bike on the sidewalk. thought it might be friends of the neighbors. There was also a $1 bill on front stoop. When I went to drive to work and walked out back noticed some wire/metal cutters and then noticed bikes were gone.
