Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I was in my apartment having lunch, and my Vista Cavalier was locked to a telephone pole out front. I came out and it was gone. It's worth nothing--well, that is to say, I paid $60 for it, as is plainly visible because the price is written in marker on the handlebars, but it's gone through a cross-country move and is now DEFINITELY worth nothing.

I parked my bike inside a locked/gated parking area (alongside an alley) and went inside for 10 minutes to load up my bag. I came out to discover my bike had been stolen. Thief had to had to jump a locked 6'6" fence, toss bike back over fence and climb out. This occurred during a 10 minute window from 3:30 to 3:40 on Sunday afternoon.

The bike was in a storage room in our condominium building along with 10 other bikes that were not disturbed. The thief would have had to get through a locked gate and a locked front door to get in. Foolishly, I thought it was secure enough that I didn't need to lock the bike itself up as well. I got it a little early as a birthday gift -- and it was already stolen before my birthday.

Bicycle along with several others sitting on residential front porch, no bicycles locked. My bicycle alone was stolen between the hours of 6am and 10am.

Someone broke my wooden fence and took the bike. There might still be a Kryptonite U-Lock still on the frame.

Bike was stolen in a very busy area, among 50+ parked bikes, it is likely that people either noticed and ignored the theft, or that the theft occurred very fast.

While working around the house someone opened a closed gate walked into my fenced yard, went into the basement storage area, removed the bike and rode off.

Locked bike to city installed bike rack on busy commercial strip of Halsted St. on beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon. Came back 2 hrs later and it was gone.

Bike rack was cut through and bike removed. Thief was identified while attempting to do this last night but he ran away. Later returned and stole the bike. This is in a series of thefts that have occurred from this rack (about 3 in one week). Likely the same person.

Reporting on behalf of a coworker-- date is a guess. He told me today he locked a new department-store level Schwinn mountain bike to the bike rack in front of the hospital entrance about 5 weeks ago, and it was stolen between 1 and 4 PM. This is a city rack, simple squared single inverted U, no sign of tampering with bolts; and he described locking with a U-lock through the frame and rack, and a cable lock to secure the other wheel. No trace of any locks was left. The bike and U-lock were both purchased at Target.

Just put bike together on Sunday. Just moved here last week. Excellent Welcome back to city living. This was the only bike taken of the 4 left unlocked in my garage. Bikes will now be kept in my room.

I left my bike in front of my dorm and forgot to lock it up overnight. I assume someone from the neighborhood (Hyde Park or Washington Park) stole it. Another bike was also stolen the same night, although it was locked with a cable lock. The only unusual thing is that there is always someone in the lobby of our dorm, but she may not have been looking outside at night.

No doubt someone up and pulled the sign out of the ground and rode off into the sunset with my brand new bike I worked my butt off for. Rookie mistake, locking it to a street sign, but not one I'll make again. Probably in broad daylight, and definitely in front of quite a few security cameras.

It was both locked to itself and to the rack (two locks). They cut the cable lock and will have to try to remove the u lock later. There was also a silver helmet attached to the lock.

Stolen in broad daylight on one of the busiest streets in downtown Chicago. Lock and bike were completely missing. I have a theory that a van or truck pulled up to the bike rack (there is a temporary loading zone right next to the racks), cut the lock and drove off quickly. There was no report at building security by anyone who might have seen something.

I locked the bike there on Tuesday, I saw it there Wednesday when I returned home, it was gone Thursday morning and a different bike was in its place

Some douchebag cut the lock and stole it.

The bike was stolen from my garage which is locked. The only way in is with a key or garage door opener. My building only has 6 units and all 6 residents have keys to the garage. The maintenence staff also has access. My bike was stolen with at least 3 others.

My bike was locked to one of the many bike racks in front of the Jefferson Park Blue Line train station. I found my cable lock around the bike that was next to mine on the rack. The lock was closed. I was able to open the lock with the key but upon trying again the keywould no longer turn the lock. I found that I could easily remove the plastic cover over the lock and I figure that the thief cut the plastic cover off to get to the lock and picked it.
