Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

I came home from Roscoe Village Bikes after getting the bike tuned up around 8 pm on Aug. 15th and locked my bike with my Kryptonite U-Lock through the front wheel and frame to the metal fence inside my apartment building's side yard. A key is required to get through the front gate where my bike was locked to the fence. At 8:30 am on Aug. 16th, I went outside to go to work and my bike was gone, along with my lock. Someone must have either had access to the front gate of our apartment building or jumped the fence, then had to break the lock to steal my bike. I made sure the lock was working just after I locked it to the fence the previous night.

Bike was stolen between 8:00pm 8/14 and 9:30am 8/15 on Palmer Square close to Kedzie. It was locked both wheels and frame with cable and U-lock to a street sign which was pulled up and the bike was taken with the lock and cable still on. Please note that in the picture the bike has a blue seat cover but when stolen did not have the seat cover. I changed the platforms so they are now green.

got home to shower at 9:00 a.m. left my bike on my back deck (1/2 story up from sidewalk) locked the street door before going inside. music was loud in bathroom. got changed and came outside and bike was gone. construction guys working on the street (10+ guys) did not see anything.

Bike was locked within gated area outside of my work, I think the maintenance man of my work was sweeping the sidewalk and had the gate unlocked which I didn't know. Someone walked by and took the bike without the maintenance man knowing.

My bike was locked to the bike rack inside my apartment building. The only part of the bike that wasn't stolen was the fron tire and U-lock.

I securely locked both the front,rear wheel, and frame to a permanent bike rack outside of 600 W. Chicago Ave office building in clear view of building associates (smoker section) and visibility of security. I left it securely locked while I worked out at David Barton Gym. When I came outside ready to to leave, the bike and lock were missing. I spoke with security and they left it in their notes, but did not mention seeing any activity.

Locked bike thru both tires and frame to bike rack on Washington at Ogilvie transportation center, returned next morning, and bike was gone. BRAND NEW, had purchased bike that day.

Stolen while shopping in Sports Authority. The U Lock was believed to be secured to the fork and thieves most likely disengaged the quick release on the wheel and shimmied the bike out.

Bike was left in garage and garage door was accidentally left open overnight. Discovered that bike was missing in the morning.

My bike was locked on the street outside my office while I was at work. It was there when I returned from a late lunch around 2pm and it was gone when I was leaving around 6:30pm.

Ed note-- after researching on victim's behalf, the best account we can put together here is that the bike was left U-locked to racks in Pitchfork protected bike parking area after the festival ended. Reportedly, the racks were stolen along with the bikes before the rental company came to pick them up.

Bikes were discovered missing from the garage. It is suspected that three persons rode up on crappy bikes, went through our gate and in through the side door. They stole our three bikes and left the crappy ones in their place.

Somebody(s) rode up (or drove up) with three crappy bikes. They went over or through our gate, into the side door of our garage and took three bikes. They left the crappy bikes in their place.

I had locked my bike to the same pole directly outside my apartment window for 3 days. I had been making short trips with it but returned it to the same spot every day. On the evening of the 12th I came home from grabbing dinner and a man was standing outside my building with a bike helmet on but no bike near him. He was just staring off into space near my bike, so I resolved to head up to my apartment and watch out the window just to make sure he wasn't checking my bike out. I didn't see anything, but the next morning when I left at 5:45am the bike and lock were gone.

Bike was taken from inside the apartment building, not inside the apartment, between Saturday night 8/10 and Monday morning 8/12. Someone must have left the door to the building open and allowed a thief to come inside. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to lock the wheel to the frame to make it impossible to ride, like I normally do.

I went to grab my bike and it was no longer locked up where I had left it. It had been there for a month since I had last checked it.

The bike was locked with the mini U lock of newer type (flat key) by its rear wheel and through the rear triangle (very secure) to a roughly 3/4 inch or 1 inch metal upright supporting a wrought iron fence. To take the bike they cut through the similarly thick top cross tube which the vertical tube intersected. They to make two cuts in the top tube to separate it from the vertical tube and then another incomplete cut in the vertical tube which allowed them to bend it forward, clear of the top tube. They then lifted the bike off of the vertical tube. I presume they then took it somewhere else to wrestle with getting cutting the ulock and/or somehow bypassing the locking skewers securring the bike componenets.

Yesterday evening (Aug 12), I rode my bike back from work and locked in to the fence around my backyard. I always lock it at the same spot. This afternoon, around 12:30pm, when I was leaving for work, my bike was gone. The only explanation is that it got stolen. No signs left behind. The chain is gone too. Take a look at the picture. It's poorly shot when I was on a bus. But that's all I have.

person who stole bike most likely waited for everyone in my household to go to bed then proceeded to cut lock and take my bike.

My bike was in the common garage for my 75-unit condominium building. It was stored in parking spot #7 on a bike rack affixed to the wall. It was not locked, but the garage is locked. There were security cameras, which are currently being reviewed by the management company to see if there is an image of the theft. My roommate parks in the spot saw it at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 12, 2013 and noticed it was missing at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday August 13, 2013.
