Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

locked outside my home during a rain storm gone in the morning.

For the past month I had my bike inside my house, in my back porch. What I'm guessing happened is the door was unlocked or open and the thief came in that way. There was nothing of value in my porch, except for my bike.

I parked and locked the bike with 2 locks (U-lock and cable) to a bike rack in front of LA Fitness on a very busy corner @ Grand & McClurg in downtown Chicago. Other bikes were there, but they were older/crappier compared to mine. I should've known. I went to the movies, came out, the bike was gone, but the U-lock remained. Talked to the receptionist at LA Fitness who was useless, no surveillance camera. Same thing from the crabby security guard at the high-rise apartment building at the opposite entrance. His only "help" was to tell me, "Yeah, at least 3 bikes a week are stolen." Gee, thanks, jackass. God forbid you'd do anything, like post a sign that says, "DON'T LOCK YOUR BIKE HERE - IT'LL GET STOLEN!"

Bike was last seen in our garage that morning. It appears someone left the side door unlocked, and someone else got lucky in trying doors. Bike was gone when we returned from work in the evening, along with 2 metal tool boxes containing socket and box wrench sets.

Bicycle was in locked area between garage and apartment building. Only entrance was in the side alley through a ten foot iron rod gate which is always locked. Thief scaled fence and used storage tub to jump back out with the bike.

Parked the bike in front of Walgreens on Western near intersection with Howard. Met a friend and had dinner at the Candlelight. Came out less than an hour later and the bike was gone -- no sign of it. I am guessing someone came along, cut the cable lock and rode off with it or put it on a truck.

My bike was locked up in an open air parking lot, on a bike rack outside my work (Steppenwolf theater). I used a Bordo lite lock (http://www.modernbike.com/itemgroup.asp?igpk=2126199753&TID=367&gclid=CISo7a3X2rgCFepFMgod6nkAhA) and someone snapped it at a joint and left the lock and took my lovely precious bike!! I saw it there all day & it was there when I went to the restaurant across the street at 9:30pm but gone when I came out at 11:30pm. I guess I should have known that the Bordo was too good to be true - it is light and compact, but obviously easy enough to snap.

Our matte black male Trek bike was stolen from our house yesterday between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. It was not locked because it was on our property.

I was in Cleveland when my this happened, however, my girlfriend told me that the cable had been cut and the lock was left behind. The bike had been locked to a gate along the inside gated walkway of my apartment. Since I am in Cleveland I have not been able to file a police report but will file one as soon as I return to Chicago.

According to neighbors, someone removed the bike very early in the morning after potentially riding their own there. Bike was disassembled and then stolen, leaving the lock intact (newer U-lock with flat key) and relocked on the rack.

All the residents in our building keep our bikes out back in the fenced in courtyard area. Bike was under a tarp. As far as I know, it was the only one stolen. Waiting on camera footage. I figure someone jumped the fence and walked out.

bike was left inside gated area while i ran inside, 3 minutes later the bike and lock from the gate were stolen.

Was locked to a bike rack outside my work at North Park University at 1 pm. Around 6 a friend asked where my bike was, and I discovered it was gone. On site security said that he hadn't seen the bike when he first came to the area around 5. The bike and lock are entirely gone, and the back rack is still intact. I'm assuming they cut the cable and ran with it.

Went inside for about an hour, came out and the bike was missing. The person had to come up the stairs, look to check if the bike was locked and then take it. I'm tall so the bike is set for a tall person. The picture i have does not have the back basket on it, and it doesn't have the rear reflector anymore, just rear and front lights.

Bike was stolen out of our private garage between Friday-Sunday. Time of day unknown.

Ed note-- victim wrote in follow-up communication that she had only been able to U-lock through the front wheel to the rack due to overcrowding/ lack of bike parking.

Back door to the building was kicked in. Bikes were in the stairwell at the bottom of the stairs.

Only front tire can be locked to the bike rack... and the lock was only around one spoke, assuming that the spoke was cut. lock remained in tact.
