It was not locked... it was in the entryway to my apartment building in a safe residential neighborhood.
Incident Description:
The bike was in the entryway to my apartment building, a large building that looks like a single family home near Montrose and California. I left it there around 5 PM on Wednesday April 29, after returning from a meeting. I was in and out of the apartment later that evening, as were my roommates, but I mostly went up the back stairs, so would not have passed through the front entry area. I always lock my bike, but recently I've been leaving it in the entryway unlocked because there is nothing to lock it to; a lot of stuff is in the way. The building is in a safe, residential area, and the entryway is hardly visible from the street. It is very surprising to me that someone would have come in and taken it, and I say that as someone who has had several bikes stolen in the past and expects the worst. I do not know whether the bike was taken last night or this morning (4/30), but I am sure it was taken between 5 PM last evening and 12 noon today.
The maintenance person for the building, who is in and out a lot doing work on a ground-floor unit, is pretty sure he saw the bike at 8:30 AM, but my roommates do not remember seeing it at 9 PM last night, so there is some conflicting information.
