Chicago Stolen Bike Registry

Copied from email sent out by landlord - Around 4:15am on Sunday, October 23rd, two men entered the building using a postal key which is a universal key used by mail carriers to buzz open building entry doors. It is now widely known that these keys are in the hands of thieves however the post office continues to use them as it is their only way to access buildings and deliver mail. I'm sorry to report that the two men who used the postal key to open the entry doors stole five bikes and several packages on Saturday morning.

I forgot to lock my bike to the street sign outside my apartment in west town

Bike was locked up in secure bike room with keypad entry. The apartment building also has a keypad entry. It is possible that the person(s) entered by following someone in or found an open door around the apartment building. The bike room door seems easy to penetrate with a sliding shim. There are some leftover metal particles from either a grinder or saw.

Locked bike outside LVAC on Belmont & Broadway. Accidentally walked home when I finished my workout and when I went back to get it it was gone

My building in Old Town was broken into and so the person had access to my garage. My bike was in the garage with a Kryptonite U lock on the front wheel and frame. They carried the whole thing out of my building's front door around 6:30 am on 10/19/22.

My bike was locked on a fence across from my apartment with a U-Lock overnight. The next morning, the frame and front wheel of the bike was stolen.

Someone threw a chunk of concrete through the foyer window of my condo and took my bike from an upstairs storage area.

Bike was locked to a bike rack with a heavy-duty chain + cable lock through front wheel + rear wheel cafe lock

Bicycle stolen in front of TJ Maxx on state street. The theft was reported to TJ Maxx management up about 5:50 PM. Call the bicycle lock was cut, leaving another bike next to it behind.

Bike was locked to metal fence. Fence was cut completely and bike was likely slipped over fence poll. Back alley on property next to carpark.

My roommate went out the back door to take the trash out and noticed that my bike wasn’t hanging up with the other bikes on our communal bike rack storage. There were some other bikes missing from the bike rack as well.

The bike was under my stairs when I have kept it forever. I live in a coach house so the bike was not visible. It was also under a black bike cover. Right next to it was my other very old mountain bike which was not locked but they didn't take that one (it's over 30 years old). I have a security camera but it conveniently stopped recording sometime around midnight and they resumed several hours later. Very strange that it went out in that window when my bike was stolen

The bike was somehow taken from the locked bike room of my apartment within the past two weeks.

The bike was left locked in front of the Regenstein Library on the University of Chicago campus. Left it at around 9:30, and it was missing at 10:55. The combination lock was not left at the scene, so it is likely that it was opened or taken.

I was finishing a night shift at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Downtown Chicago. My bike was parked at the bike rack on the intersection of Fairbanks and Superior. At 8:30 AM or around that time I was about to cross the street to get my bike, and I notice that it is missing, and that my kryptonite u lock is hanging by my kryptonite cable wire lock. I look up and I see a man, black, in a black hoodie, black cap/hoodie, riding away on my bike towards Michigan ave. I chased him until Michigan where he was able to cross and I was not fast enough and hit the red light. He kept going and I lost sight of him. I called the police and made a report and have footage of him stealing my bike.
