The following note was left from another person (not the thief): "I'm sorry to inform you that your bike was stolen. A man in a green shirt broke your chain with pliers and took your bike. An eyewitness called the Chicago Police Department, but the thief got away." The security guard at Rush says that it happens a lot in this area, and that a common tactic is for the thief to sit on the bike like it's his, but what he's really doing is discreetly reaching down with a compact set of bolt cutters to cut the cable.

I give the combo because I believe it increases the odds of getting it back or at least making this guys day a little worse, so if you see it feel free to steal it again!!

Bike rack was located on the side of the building, very close to main entrance. Many bikes are locked there continually. My husband's bike was locked on the side part of the rack, and thief sawed through the rack itself, and lifted the bike and lock off. Also stolen at the same time was a seatpost/seat from my bike, locked next to his, but on the main part of the rack - and it is not quick release. This thief travels with tools (saw and allen wrenches). After school let out (June 11) we counted 5 bikes stolen from this same rack over a period of 2-3 weeks, with similar rack-cutting or lock cable-cutting incidents. So far, no U-locks have been cut that we can see.
